Mike Shabay graduated from Bell High School in 1967. He was a two-year letterman in basketball and a starter on the team known as “The Miracle Workers” in 1965-1966, under Coach Nelson Moore. This team was inducted into the HEB Hall of Fame in 1996. In his senior year, Mike received First Team All-District honors. He went on to play basketball for two years at TCU.
Mike’s coaching career spanned 20 years, 14 of which were spent at L.D. Bell High School, Trinity High School, Euless Junior High and Bedford Junior High. During this time, he was part of six district championships, two on the varsity level with the 1977-78 Bell Basketball team and the 1978 Bell Football team. He had four sub-varsity district championships with the 1973-74 Euless Junior High freshmen basketball team, 1979-80 Bell JV basketball team, 1980-81 Bell JV basketball team, and the 1983 Bedford Junior High freshmen football team. He finished his coaching career at Castleberry High School where he led his 1988 Castleberry team to the playoffs for the school’s first time in 26 years. Mike started the first FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes) chapter at L.D. Bell High School, first as a student in 1965 then again as a coach in 1971. He is extremely proud that 18 of his former players became coaches, and three more became pastors. This is what he considers his legacy. Mike and his wife of 48 years, Mary Ellen, have two children, Mindy and Matt and four grandchildren. Today, Mike is enjoying retirement, playing golf several times a week with his brother, PD, taking care of his grandchildren, and traveling to the mountains during the summer time. |
