John received a walk-on football scholarship to Sam Houston State University where he became team captain. In 1964, John played on the National Co-Champion Football Team. In 1965, John was the lead pass receiver for Sam Houston State University.
John was a teacher and a coach at Conroe ISD for ten years before coming to HEBISD. He was Offensive Coordinator at L.D. Bell High School for 23 years where he called all the offensive plays. While coaching at L.D. Bell High School, they reached the play-offs 12 times and played at the old Cowboys Stadium 23 games. In 1982, Bell and Trinity were the first year two teams from the same district competing in the play-offs. Bell played Trinity twice that year and won both games. L.D. Bell High School played in the Texas State Football Championship Game in 1982. In 1986, Bell High School was in the State Semi-Finals and in 1989 Area Finals. In 1984, John was the assistant coach for the North Squad for the Texas High School Coaching Association All Star Football game. In addition, two of the L.D. Bell high school football teams, 1985 and 1991, were undefeated (10-0) during the regular season. John felt honored to have had the opportunity to coach a myriad of young athletes at L.D. Bell High Schools. Eight of his athletes made it to the NFL as players or coaches. Presently serving a HEB-SHF Board of Directors; past Board Chairman 2015-2016. |
