Andy Cargile was born on September 18, 1946 in New Haven, CT. He graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 1965. Later he went to Lon Morris Junior College on a basketball scholarship. Andy describes himself as the “tallest slow starter” when he played basketball at Thomas Jefferson High School. He had one offer out coming out of high school but more than 60 offers when he came out of junior college. He graduated from East Texas State University (now Texas A&M Commerce) and got his Master’s Degree in 1971.
Andy was hired in HEB ISD as a World History teacher and Assistant Basketball Coach straight out of college in 1971. In 1975, he started teaching at Dallas ISD and was head coach at Jefferson High School (1976-1982). In 1982, he moved on to South Grand Prairie High School where he coached baseball and basketball. He returned to HEB ISD in 1984 to finish out the remaining 23 years of his career. His final position in the district was principal at Trinity High School from 1998 to 2007. This time, the AP and IB scores skyrocketed. They were up 10 points in every category on every test. Such an accomplishment supports Andy’s favorite saying, “If you take good care of the machine, it will turn out a better product.” He believed in everything they did at Trinity, the first thing was to consider if it was good for the kids. In 2007, the year he retired, he was named Principal of the Year by Just for Kids. He was up against 1200 principals. Other honors include induction into the Thomas Jefferson High School Athletic Hall of Fame as well as Distinguished Alumni Hall Of Fame. Andy joined the HEB ISD Board of Trustees in May 2008. He continues to serve on the board, while also enjoying time with his wife, Karen, daughters Kristen and Kourtney and five grandchildren, Preston, Kennedy, Olivia, Andrew and Eli. |
